City Flags

City flags in the United States are typically not very good. I am in the process of redesigning them for fun.

I will update flags as time goes on. If you are interested in using these designs please contact me.

These flags are rough drafts and may need to be modified before use.

San Francisco, CA

This flag is a combination of San Francisco’s current flag and the 1836 California “Lone Star” flag. San Francisco’s official city colors are gold and black because of the city’s motto “Oro en Paz – Fierro en Guerra” (Gold in peace; Iron in warfare). These colors are represented in the gold and black borders surrounding the white field. The red star in the center is the same shade of red as the star on California’s state flag.

Another popular flag redesign is Brian Stokle’s “Fog and Gold” flag.

Detroit, MI

This is simply a cleaned up version of Detroit’s current flag with the central seal removed and slight adjustments to the placement of items on the flag.

Another popular flag redesign is Deon Mixon’s “Detroit Rise” flag.

Vancouver, WA

This flag was submitted to Vancouver, WA’s 2025 flag redesign competition. The design is a modified version of the city’s current flag. The colors come from Vancouver’s official color palette. The 10 pointed sun is taken from the current flag and the river feature is meant to represent the Columbia River that Vancouver borders. Additionally, given the shared name with Vancouver, BC, the design of the river feature is meant to evoke the water design used on the Vancouver, BC city flag and the British Columbia provincial flag.
